- I. INTRODUCTION
-
- This digitally compiled map includes geology, geologic provinces, and oil and gas fields
- of the Former Soviet Union. The map is part of a worldwide series on CD-ROM by World Energy
- Project released of the U.S. Geological Survey . The goal of the project is to assess the
- undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world and report these
- results by the year 2000.
-
- For data management purposes the world is divided into eight energy regions corresponding
- approximately to the economic regions of the world as defined by the U.S. Department of State.
- The Former Soviet Union (Region 1) includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Byelarus, Estonia, Georgia,
- Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine,
- and Uzbekistan.
-
- Each region is then further divided into geologic provinces on the basis of natural geologic
- entities and may include a dominant structural element or a number of contiguous elements.
- Some provinces contain multiple genetically related basins.
-
- Geologic province boundaries for the Former Soviet Union are delineated using data from
- a number of geologic maps, and other tectonic and geographic data (see References).
- Offshore province boundaries are defined by the 2000 meter bathymetric contour from the map
- edited by Gabrielyants, 1990 (see References). Each province is assigned a unique number;
- the first digit is the region number. It is attempted to number the provinces in
- geographical groups; onshore, offshore, and combined on and offshore. The numbering starts
- in the west. The list of the provinces sorted by Code and by Name is shown in Adobe
- Acrobat fsumap.pdf file (see section V below).
-
- Oil and gas field data from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation worldwide oil
- and gas field database are allocated to these provinces. The geologic provinces are being
- further subdivided into petroleum systems and assessment units in order to appraise the
- undiscovered petroleum potential of selected provinces of the world. For a more in-depth
- discussion on the geologic provinces and their relative ranking in terms of total known
- petroleum volume, see Klett and others, 1997.
-
- Specific details of the data sources and map compilation are given in the metadata file on
- this CD-ROM. Smaller stratigraphic subdivisions of Phanerozoic rock are combined to simplify
- the map and to maintain consistency with other maps of the series. Precambrian rocks are
- undivided. Oil and gas field markers represent field centerpoints published with permission
- from Petroconsultants International Data Corp.,1996 database.
-
- This map is compiled using Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) ARC/INFO
- software. Political boundaries and cartographic representations on this map were taken, with
- permission, from ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M digital coverages, have no political significance, and
- are displayed as general reference only.

- A. Contents
- Files on this CD-ROM include:
-
- 1. fsumap.pdf Portable Document File (PDF files for Acrobat)
- This file is a complete color map of geology, oil and gas field centerpoints from the
- Petroconsultants 1996 database, geological provinces at the scale of 1:7,500,000, country
- boundaries from ESRI's ArcWorld3M in an Adobe Portable Document File. File contains 13 pages
- including geological provinces list sorted by Name and by Code.
- This file is readable by means of the freeware program, Acrobat Reader 3, that is included
- on the CD_ROM. Instructions below describe how to install Acrobat, as well as launch, view,
- navigate, and search the file. This PDF file and accompanying software allows users to preview
- the map data contained in this product.
-
- 2. Various installation instructions and files for Adobe Acrobat reader, see section VI. below.
-
- 3. fsu_geo.aep - ArcExplorer 1.1 Project file (workspace is \fsu\views - source ArcView shape
- files).
- This file consists of geology, geologic province, oil and gas fields centerpoints, major cities,
- and latitude/longitude grid layers (ArcView themes).
- This file is readable by means of the freeware program, ESRI's ArcExplorer 1.1.
- It can be installed from this CD-ROM or downloaded FREE from ESRI home page - www.esri.com.
-
- 4. Metadata descriptors (created in accordance to FGDC standards for metadata) in two formats:
- Macintosh text file format, and PC text file format located in fsu/metadata. There are several
- files in that directory: each for ARC/INFO coverage.
- The major files are: rus_met.dos for PC and rus_met.mac for Macintosh.
-
- 5. ARC/Info export files, located in the /fsu/export subdirectory, for PC systems and UNIX
- systems, (see metadata file for complete list) consisting of coverages for geologic age,
- province boundaries, oil and gas field centerpoints, country boundaries in the following
- formats:
- a. ARC/Info export files in standard interchange format (with .e00 extension)
- b. Ungenerate files (with.gen extension)
- c. Attribute files (with .csv extension)
-
- 6. ARC/Info coverage files (ARC/Info cover directories) for the entire map are located in
- fsu/arc_covr directory.
-
- 7. ARC/Info plot files, located in the fsu/plot subdirectory, consisting of two ARC/INFO graphic
- files ( /fsu/plot/rus_all.gra and /fsu/plot/index.gra), one RTL format plot file
- (with .rtl extension) for direct use with HP650C color plotter and three EPS files
- (.eps extention) for use in Adobe Illustrator ver. 7.0.
-
- 8. ARCVIEW files in fsu/views for users with ESRI's ARCVIEW 3.0 or later. These are shape files
- for the geology, province boundaries, oil/gas fields centerpoints, country boundaries, and major
- cities in Equidistant Conic projection.
- UNIX ArcView users have to set up environment variable if they intend to work with these data
- directly from CD-ROM. The line should be like this:
- setenv AVDATA01 /cdrom/of97470e/fsu/views
- PC ArcView users have to add line to Autoexec.bat file like this:
- set AVDATA01 = e:\fsu\views, where e: is logical name of CD-ROM drive
- and then reboot PC.
-
- VI. ACROBAT READER INSTALLATION

- The file can be accessed from the CD-ROM, however, response will be greatly improved if the file
- is copied to a disk drive.
- 2. Install Acrobat Reader 3 on your hard drive if not already installed.
- 3. Launch Acrobat Reader and then open the fsumap.PDF file.
- Refer to the read me and text files supplied for each type of Acrobat reader for specific

- VII. HINTS FOR USING ACROBAT
- ****************************
- The Acrobat toolbar is located along the top of the Acrobat screen. Most of the icons in the
- tool bar are self-explanatory. The arrow icons move one page at a time. The bar-arrow icons go
- to the first or last page in the file. The double-arrow icon allows the user to go back and
- retrace previous views. Clicking on the red text links to other relevant pages or portions of
- pages or maps. The cursor changes to a pointing finger when it passes over links. For example,
- the hand icon, changes to a pointing finger, which indicates that it is over a link.
- The fsumap.pdf file contains several buttons to facilitate navigation within the file. The top
- and bottom pointing green arrows advance the reader to previous and next page in the PDF file.
- The left pointing button will take you to the last view and is the same as selecting Go Back
- from the View menu. Other convenient way to go back is to click right mouse button.
- Each panning or magnification change is considered a view by the Acrobat Reader software.
- The magnification glass icon can be accessed in the tool bar at the top of the screen and also
- along the bottom of the screen to zoom in or out . The Thumbnail icons on the left side of the
- screen can be clicked on to jump directly to that page. The page that is currently displayed
- will be highlighted. A box on the Thumbnail shows which portion of the page is being displayed.
- Moving this box will display a different portion of the page. Changing the size of the box will
- also change the amount of enlargement. Clicking on Province name or Code will invoke Province
- map on the page 12. To go back click on right mouse button.
- The Acrobat Reader software is described in more detail in the Online Guide that can be accessed
- once you run the Acrobat application.
